Why would I ride my bike in winter?

Why would I ride my bike in the winter? To many, the idea of getting onto a bike in winter is crazy. There’s more maintenance involved with salty roads. Little problems can turn big fast when it’s cold and dark. Cars are scary even when the roads are clear. Winter biking is inherently slower and therefore, not nearly as fun as riding in the warmer season.

There are many factors that contribute to my decision to continue commuting by bike as the snow flies. But let’s start with all the factors that make it easier for me to make it happen.

My commute is short. If I wake up early I can make a really fun loop around town, and one of the best times to ride around Rutland is early morning when there is nearly zero traffic. But I’m lucky to live near my local trail network Pine Hill Park, which is only approximately one mile away from Downtown Rutland, so it’s easy for me on those snowy/icy/slushy days when I just need to get where I’m going!

Access to a protected recreation path. The Creek Path runs alongside East Creek and intersects with State Street, making a majority of my ride car-free if I choose.

I don’t commute every day. I am keeping my commuting challenge flexible by only firmly committing to riding my bike to work 3 days a week.

Secure bike storage. One of the perks of owning a bike shop in Downtown Rutland is I can always lock my bike in the shop out of the elements when I go to run errands or catch The Bus (which is free if you didn’t know!).

Now, to the real question: Why would I ride my bike in the winter?

Energizing. It’s easy to let the cold months get to you. I find myself sinking into my couch more often as the sun sets earlier in the day. Thankfully, my morning rides helps keep me out of the SAD (seasonal affective disorder) by getting me out in the sunshine (as much as Vermont has to offer) and the exercise releases the happy hormones, serotonin and dopamine. Fresh air at the start of the day keeps my immune system working as well, and I do not have time to catch a cold!

Staying sharp. Many a spring I’ve wiped the dust off my bike after a long winter and hit the trails to have the worst ride of the season. The “get back on the horse” ride. This year 2026 I am hoping to skip over the spring biking hump of suckin’ wind and just enjoying the trails. According to Harvard Health, winter exercise can improve endurance because the “heart doesn't have to work as hard, you sweat less, and expend less energy, all of which means you can exercise more efficiently” -Dr. Tenforde. Not only that, my balance and technical skills are challenged in ways that are different from any other time of the year, keeping me sharp.

… It’s FUN? Yes it’s cold. Yes there’s some extra steps. And YES, I am still having a good time. I love watching the sky change colors in the morning. It feels like I’m going off on a little adventure as I prepare to face the frigid temps. I feel better prepared for non-bike winter activities. After each ride (even if I only went a mile that day!) I feel accomplished.

Would I ride my bike in winter if it was 10 miles of car filled streets? Maybe not. But will I keep riding my bike when it makes sense, even in the wintertime? You can bet your biscuits.

See you out on the bike!

Paige
